P0601: PCM Memory Error — Dodge & Ram Fix

What Does P0601 Mean on a Dodge?

If your Dodge is throwing code P0601, the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) has detected a memory checksum error during its startup self-test. Every time you turn the key on a Dodge Ram, Durango, Dakota, or any other Dodge model, the PCM verifies its internal memory is intact. When that check fails, it stores P0601.

Bottom line: the Dodge PCM's internal memory is corrupted or failing. This code points directly at the module itself — not a sensor or wiring issue.

P0601 Symptoms on Dodge Vehicles

  • Check engine light on — often the first sign on Dodge Ram trucks and Durango SUVs
  • No-start or crank-no-start — common on Dodge Dakota and Ram trucks with P0601
  • Stalling at idle — especially on Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan models
  • Limp mode — the Dodge transmission locks into second gear
  • Poor fuel economy and rough idle
  • Multiple unrelated codes stored alongside P0601

What Causes P0601 on a Dodge?

  • Internal PCM failure — the memory chip inside the Dodge PCM has degraded. This is the #1 cause on high-mileage Dodge trucks and SUVs.
  • Battery and voltage problems — a dying battery or corroded ground connections on a Dodge Ram can corrupt PCM memory. The Dodge Ram's PCM sits near the battery, making it especially vulnerable.
  • Water damage — the Dodge Durango and Dakota have the PCM mounted low in the engine bay where road spray and moisture get in.
  • Interrupted dealer flash — a software update at the Dodge dealer that lost power mid-write can corrupt the PCM.

Dodge Models That Commonly Throw P0601

We see P0601 regularly on these Dodge vehicles — and we stock replacement PCMs for every one of them:

  • Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 & 3500 (1996–2007) — the PCM sits in the engine bay right next to the battery. Acid fumes eat through the connector and kill the module. The 5.7L Hemi and 4.7L V8 Rams are the most common.
  • Dodge Durango (1998–2007) — both the 4.7L and 5.9L Durangos. PCM placement exposes it to moisture and heat.
  • Dodge Dakota (1996–2007) — very common on higher-mileage Dakotas, especially the 3.9L and 4.7L.
  • Dodge Grand Caravan & Caravan (1996–2007) — age-related PCM failures on the 3.3L and 3.8L engines.
  • Dodge Charger (2005–2008) — the 2.7L, 5.7L Hemi, and 6.1L SRT8 models.
  • Dodge Intrepid (1998–2004) — common on the 2.7L and 3.5L engines.

Can You Drive a Dodge With P0601?

Your Dodge might still run, but it's operating on backup parameters — reduced power, poor shifting, bad fuel economy. The bigger risk is that the Dodge PCM could fail completely while you're driving, killing the engine with no warning.

How to Fix P0601 on a Dodge

  1. Clear the code — if it returns immediately on your Dodge, the PCM has failed.
  2. Test the Dodge battery — should read 12.4V+ engine off. Check the ground straps on the Dodge Ram (they corrode where they bolt to the fender).
  3. Inspect the Dodge PCM connector — look for green corrosion or moisture on the pins. On Dodge Rams, pull the connector and check for battery acid residue.
  4. Replace the Dodge PCM — if the code keeps coming back, the module is done. A replacement Dodge PCM must be programmed to your vehicle's VIN.
