The ECM commands injection (mechanical VP44 or high-pressure common rail), boost, exhaust brake, and on 6.7 trucks DPF / EGR / later DEF. 2003 and 2004 trucks are the split years: some are still VP44, some are common-rail. The door-jamb build date and the VIN matter.

Failure pattern: hard cold start, white smoke, no power above 2,500 rpm, or a complete no-start with a lift pump that already primes. If a scan tool cannot talk to the ECM, stop buying sensors. We repair some early firewall units and sell VIN-programmed replacements for the rest. Lifetime warranty on both.
