PCM Installation Instructions

Installing your new pre-programmed PCM is a straightforward process that most vehicle owners can complete in 15-30 minutes with basic hand tools. This guide covers the general installation procedure for most Dodge vehicles including Ram, Charger, Challenger, Durango, and more.

Before You Begin

Safety Precautions

  • Work in a well-ventilated area
  • Wear safety glasses
  • Remove rings, watches, and loose jewelry that could contact electrical components
  • Allow the engine to cool if the vehicle was recently running
  • Work on a level surface with the parking brake engaged

Tools Required

  • 10mm socket or wrench
  • 8mm socket (some models)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers (helpful but not required)
  • Clean cloth or towel
  • Flashlight (if working in a dark area)

Verify Your Part Number

Before beginning installation, verify that the part number on the new PCM matches your order and is compatible with your vehicle. Compare it to the part number on your original PCM if possible.

PCM Location by Dodge Model

Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 Trucks (2002-2024)

The PCM is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side, near the firewall. It is mounted in a bracket and has two or three large electrical connectors.

Charger and Challenger (2006-2024)

The PCM is located in the engine compartment on the passenger side, typically mounted to the inner fender or near the air filter box.

Durango (1998-2024)

The PCM is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side, near the firewall or brake master cylinder.

Grand Caravan and Journey

The PCM is typically located behind the battery or near the driver's side strut tower in the engine compartment.

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

Open the hood and locate the battery. Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the negative (black) battery terminal clamp and remove the cable from the battery post. Tuck the cable away so it cannot accidentally contact the battery terminal. Wait 5 minutes before proceeding to allow residual power to dissipate.

Step 2: Locate the PCM

Refer to the location guide above for your specific model. The PCM is a rectangular metal or plastic box approximately 6-8 inches long with large multi-pin electrical connectors attached.

Step 3: Photograph the Connections

Before disconnecting anything, take a photo of the PCM and its connections with your phone. This will help ensure you reconnect everything correctly.

Step 4: Disconnect the Electrical Connectors

The PCM will have 2-4 large electrical connectors. Each connector has a locking tab or lever that must be released before the connector can be removed:

  • Lever-type: Lift the lever to unlock, then pull the connector straight out
  • Tab-type: Press the tab inward while pulling the connector out
  • Sliding lock: Slide the lock to the unlocked position, then pull the connector

Gently wiggle the connector while pulling to avoid bending pins. Never pull on the wires themselves.

Step 5: Remove the Mounting Bolts

The PCM is typically secured with 2-4 bolts (usually 10mm). Remove all mounting bolts and set them aside. Some models may have a bracket that comes off with the PCM.

Step 6: Remove the Old PCM

Carefully lift the PCM out of its mounting location. Note the orientation so you can install the new unit in the same position.

Step 7: Install the New PCM

Position the new PCM in the same orientation as the original. Align the mounting holes and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts snugly but do not overtighten.

Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connectors

Reconnect each electrical connector to the new PCM. The connectors are keyed and will only fit one way. Push each connector firmly until the locking mechanism clicks into place. Verify all connectors are fully seated.

Step 9: Reconnect the Battery

Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the clamp. Ensure the connection is secure.

Step 10: Initial Start-Up Procedure

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine). Wait 30 seconds for the PCM to initialize.
  2. Start the engine. It may take a few extra cranks on the first start as the fuel system primes.
  3. Allow the engine to idle for 10-15 minutes. The PCM needs to complete various relearn procedures.
  4. Turn off the engine, wait 10 seconds, then restart to verify normal operation.

After Installation

PCM Relearn Procedures

The PCM will automatically relearn certain parameters over the first 50-100 miles of driving, including:

  • Idle speed calibration
  • Fuel trim values
  • Transmission shift points
  • Throttle position adaptation

During this period, you may notice slightly rough idle or unusual shifting. This is normal and will resolve as the PCM adapts to your engine.

Check Engine Light

If the check engine light illuminates after installation, allow the vehicle to complete several drive cycles (start, drive for 20+ minutes, stop). Many codes will clear automatically. If the light persists after 3-5 drive cycles, have the codes read to diagnose any underlying issues.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Vehicle Won't Start After PCM Installation

  • Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated
  • Check that the battery is properly connected
  • Ensure the battery has adequate charge
  • Verify the correct PCM was ordered for your vehicle

Security Light Flashing

If the security light flashes and the engine won't start, the immobilizer system may need to sync with the new PCM. Contact our support team for assistance with the security relearn procedure.
