Understanding PCM Error Codes
When your check engine light comes on, your vehicle's PCM (Powertrain Control Module) has detected a problem and stored a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). These codes help identify what's going wrong with your engine, transmission, or emissions system.
Our error code guides explain each code in plain language — what it means, what causes it, common symptoms you'll notice, and whether you need a PCM replacement or a simpler fix. Every guide is written by our ASE-certified technicians who work with Dodge and Ram PCMs every day.
Common PCM-Related Error Codes
- P0601: Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error — often means the PCM itself has failed.
- P0606: PCM Processor Fault — the PCM's internal processor is malfunctioning.
- P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction — can indicate PCM or TCM failure.
- U0100: Lost Communication with ECM/PCM — wiring issue or failed PCM.
- U0101: Lost Communication with TCM — transmission module communication failure.
If your Dodge or Ram is showing any of these codes, browse our guides above or shop for a replacement PCM programmed to your VIN.
